Each year, 169,000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer deaths among both men and women. A new research study is trying to determine the best method of detecting the disease early in both current and former smokers, with the goal of saving more lives.

Background

Each year, 169,000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer deaths among both men and women. According to the American Cancer Society, smoking is the direct cause of nearly 90 percent of all lung cancers. A new research study is trying to determine the best method of detecting the disease early in both current and former smokers, with the goal of saving more lives. Study participants are selected randomly to receive either a chest X-ray or a CT scan once a year for three years.
